IWT was the government agency for Innovation by Science and Technology between 1991-2015.
It acted as the one-stop-shop for all industrial R&D and innovation support in Flanders. The agency's objectives were:
- encouraging innovation through funding of research projects
- giving advice to companies and research centres
- coordinating networks for cooperation (e.g. national VIS? network and internationally Enterprise Europe Network?)
- supporting the Government of Flanders in its innovation policy.
In the July 2014 the Flemish Government announced that IWT will cease to exist as a separate organisation:
Activities towards companies: merger with Enterprise Flanders
In the process of simplifying the government of Flanders, the activities of IWT and Enterprise Flanders merged into one agency as of January 2016: Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO) (in Dutch: Agentschap Innoveren & Ondernemen).
The new agency is charged with implementing the economic, innovation and enterprise policy in Flanders, the Dutch speaking northern part of Belgium.
Activities towards universities: merger with FWO
The activities of IWT towards universities will, together with the Hercules foundation for support for investments in Research Infrastructure, integrated with the FWO.
On this website you can find information concerning activities as executed by former IWT, until the transition phase has come to an end (Spring 2017).
